Pharmaceutical Dosage Forms in Veterinary Compounding

Veterinary Compounding

This course explores the critical role of pharmaceutical dosage forms in veterinary compounding, highlighting how formulation design directly impacts treatment adherence, therapeutic efficacy, and animal welfare. In veterinary practice, medications are only effective if they can be successfully administered, making the selection of the appropriate dosage form a key clinical decision.

Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of how species-specific characteristics — such as taste perception, olfactory sensitivity, and behavioral differences between dogs and cats — influence the acceptance of compounded medications. The course examines how factors like flavor, texture, size, and administration route must be adapted to each animal to ensure compliance and treatment success. A strong focus is placed on innovative veterinary dosage forms, including medicated biscuits, oral suspensions and pastes, orodispersible films, capsules, and transdermal delivery systems. Learners will explore the advantages, limitations, and formulation considerations of each option, as well as the importance of excipient selection, stability, bioavailability, and compatibility between APIs and vehicles.

Through practical examples and real-world applications, this course provides pharmacists and veterinary professionals with the tools to design personalized, safe, and effective compounded medications, improving both adherence and clinical outcomes in veterinary patients.
