The vaginal administration route presents a potential alternative for systemic and local absorption of different APIs due to its rich network of blood vessels, large surface area, and high permeability. Nevertheless, traditional vaginal formulations, such as creams, gels, and vaginal inserts, are commonly associated with several disadvantages related to their low retention time in the vaginal mucosa, leakage, and messiness. Vaginal films present relevant advantages over other vaginal dosage forms since they are smaller, easy to store and transport, and have increased stability, especially compared to gels, creams, and inserts.

In this course, we will discuss the advantages of vaginal films as therapeutic approach in gynecology, by also introducing FemPhyllo™, the first ready-to-use base specially developed for producing mucoadhesive vaginal films. FemPhyllo™ is gynecologically tested and compatible with various APIs commonly used in vaginal treatments, presenting a safe and efficient solution for greater patient comfort and adherence to personalized therapies.
